What This Skill Does
Newman is the command-line runner for Postman collections. It executes API tests from exported collection files with support for environments, data-driven iteration, and multiple report formats. Runs anywhere Node.js is available, including CI/CD pipelines.
Unlike running tests manually in the Postman desktop app, Newman enables fully headless, scriptable execution that integrates directly into CI/CD pipelines without any GUI dependency.
When to use it
- Running Postman API tests automatically on every pull request
- Generating HTML and JUnit reports from collection runs for test dashboards
- Data-driven testing across multiple user credentials from a CSV file
- Regression testing API endpoints before deploying to staging
- Load testing an endpoint with high iteration counts and custom request delays
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: Run my Postman collection against staging and produce a test report
- 1Export collection as collection.json and staging environment as staging.json from Postman desktop
- 2Run: newman run collection.json -e staging.json --reporters cli,html,junit
- 3Add output paths: --reporter-html-export ./reports/newman.html --reporter-junit-export ./reports/newman.xml --bail
- 4Check exit code and surface failed tests from CLI output
HTML report at ./reports/newman.html and JUnit XML at ./reports/newman.xml with pass/fail status per request
