What This Skill Does

Fetches full-text articles from PubMed Central using NCBI's E-utilities and OAI-PMH APIs. Supports journal search by query and year, individual article retrieval, and batch harvesting across multiple journals. Returns structured JATS XML with parsed title, abstract, and body fields.

Direct access to NCBI's official OAI-PMH endpoint returns structured JATS XML without requiring API keys or account registration, unlike scraping or third-party aggregators.

When to use it

  • Building a RAG dataset from stroke research journals
  • Screening abstracts across a year of neurology publications
  • Batch downloading open-access articles for an NLP training corpus
  • Retrieving full-text XML for a specific PMCID citation
  • Automating literature harvests for a biomedical review pipeline

Example Workflow

Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.

INPUT

User asks: Collect all 2025 open-access articles from Journal of Stroke for a RAG pipeline

AGENT
  1. 1Runs search with --search "J Stroke[journal]" --year 2025 to retrieve matching PMCIDs
  2. 2Calls esummary.fcgi to fetch metadata for each article
  3. 3Requests full-text XML via OAI-PMH GetRecord for each PMCID
  4. 4Parses JATS XML to extract title, abstract, and body
  5. 5Returns structured article objects ready for ingestion
OUTPUT

Array of structured articles with title, abstract, and body fields for all open-access 2025 Journal of Stroke publications
