What This Skill Does

fzf is a general-purpose command-line fuzzy finder that filters any piped input interactively. It integrates with shell keybindings, git, vim, docker, and kubectl through standard Unix pipes.

It works through Unix pipes so it adds interactive fuzzy selection to any existing command without replacing the underlying tools.

When to use it

  • Searching shell command history with fuzzy matching
  • Selecting files to open in an editor without typing full paths
  • Checking out git branches by typing a name fragment
  • Killing a running process by searching ps output
  • Navigating into a nested directory without tab-completing each level

Example Workflow

Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.

INPUT

User asks: open a file from the current project in vim with a syntax-highlighted preview

AGENT
  1. 1Pipe the file list to fzf with --preview 'bat --color=always {}'
  2. 2User types a partial filename to narrow the results
  3. 3Preview window renders file contents for the highlighted entry
  4. 4User presses Enter to confirm the selection
  5. 5vim opens the chosen file
OUTPUT

vim opens the selected file directly from the fuzzy search result
