What This Skill Does
Passes natural language commands to Home Assistant's built-in Assist (Conversation) API to control smart home devices. Handles lights, switches, thermostats, covers, vacuums, media players, and any other entity in Home Assistant. Intent parsing and entity resolution are handled by Assist, not the agent.
Delegates intent parsing and entity resolution to Home Assistant's native NLU instead of reimplementing that logic in the agent, keeping commands fast and token-efficient.
When to use it
- Turn off all lights before leaving home
- Set the thermostat to a specific temperature
- Ask which lights are currently on
- Control a specific room's devices by area
- Trigger a vacuum to start cleaning
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: turn on the living room lights
- 1Reads HASS_SERVER and HASS_TOKEN from environment
- 2Sends POST request to /api/conversation/process with the natural language text
- 3Receives response from Assist with response.speech.plain.speech field
- 4Relays the speech text back to the user
"Turned on the light" — Home Assistant confirms the entity was activated
