What This Skill Does

A structured playbook for solopreneurs to define, validate, and communicate a competitive market position. Covers five positioning archetypes, a fill-in-the-blank positioning statement template, and a messaging hierarchy that maps to real touchpoints like homepages, outreach emails, and sales calls.

Instead of generic brand advice, it gives a repeatable template and five concrete archetypes that produce a testable, specific position rather than vague differentiation claims.

When to use it

  • Deciding how to differentiate a freelance service from larger agencies
  • Writing a homepage headline that speaks to a specific customer segment
  • Choosing whether to compete as a specialist or simplifier in a crowded market
  • Stress-testing a positioning idea before investing in marketing
  • Auditing inconsistent messaging across website, emails, and proposals

Example Workflow

Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.

INPUT

User asks: I'm a freelance developer offering project management tools. How do I differentiate from Basecamp and Asana?

AGENT
  1. 1Maps the competitive set: direct alternatives (Asana, Basecamp), indirect alternatives (spreadsheets, email threads), and status quo (doing nothing)
  2. 2Identifies that the dominant tools are built for large teams, creating a Simplifier or Specialist opportunity
  3. 3Selects Archetype A (Specialist) and drafts a positioning statement using the FOR/WHO/IS A/THAT/UNLIKE template
  4. 4Validates the position against the five stress-test questions (believable, important, defensible, specific, testable)
  5. 5Builds a four-level messaging hierarchy with a headline, sub-headline, supporting claims, and social proof line
OUTPUT

A two-sentence external positioning statement and a four-level messaging hierarchy ready to use on the homepage and in outreach emails
