What This Skill Does
Golden Master tracks source-of-truth relationships between files using cryptographic checksums embedded as metadata comments. It identifies when derived files (like READMEs or guides) become stale relative to their source documents. Relationships require human confirmation before tracking is established.
Embedding checksums directly in files means staleness is detectable without a separate tracking database or external service.
When to use it
- Detecting when a README drifts from the architecture doc it summarizes
- Checking if quickstart guides are current after a source update
- Setting up staleness tracking across a documentation suite
- Finding which files depend on a specific source document
- Auditing freshness before a documentation release
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: Is my README still in sync with ARCHITECTURE.md?
- 1Scan both files for existing golden-master metadata comments
- 2Compare stored source checksum in README.md against current SHA256 of ARCHITECTURE.md
- 3Report which lines in ARCHITECTURE.md changed since the checksum was recorded
- 4Generate an updated metadata comment for README.md once user confirms they've synced it
Staleness report showing README.md is 12 days behind, with specific changed lines listed and a refreshed metadata comment ready to paste
