Version History
- Added a homepage link to metadata. - Defined required environment variables (`STARLING_HUB_IP`, `STARLING_API_KEY`) in structured metadata format. - No changes to logic, workflows, or documentation content.
What This Skill Does
Controls Nest and Google Home devices through the Starling Home Hub's local REST API. Supports thermostats, cameras, Nest Protects, Nest × Yale locks, temperature sensors, and home/away mode. All communication stays on the local network.
Unlike cloud-based integrations, this runs entirely on the local network, so device control works without internet access and avoids third-party cloud latency.
When to use it
- Set thermostat temperature on a schedule
- Lock front door remotely via voice or script
- Get a snapshot from a security camera
- Check smoke or CO detector status
- Toggle home/away mode based on location
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: lock the front door and set the thermostat to 20°C
- 1Run `starling.sh status` to confirm hub is ready and connected to Nest
- 2Run `starling.sh devices` to list available devices and find the lock and thermostat IDs
- 3Run `starling.sh set <lock-id> targetState=locked` to lock the door
- 4Run `starling.sh set <thermostat-id> targetTemperature=20` to set the temperature
- 5Confirm both operations returned success responses
