What This Skill Does
GitMap wraps the `gitmap` CLI to expose Git-like version control for ArcGIS web maps as callable tools. It covers branch, commit, diff, push/pull, and map discovery against ArcGIS Online and Enterprise Portal. No local database is required.
ArcGIS Online has no native version history for web maps; GitMap adds branching, diffing, and commit history without requiring a local database.
When to use it
- Tracking layer symbology changes before publishing to Portal
- Creating feature branches for experimental basemap updates
- Reviewing commit history of a shared team web map
- Syncing local map edits back to ArcGIS Online
- Discovering and filtering web maps owned by a specific user
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: Commit my current web map edits and push them to Portal
- 1Calls gitmap_status to show what changed in the local repo
- 2Calls gitmap_commit with the user's message to snapshot the current map state
- 3Calls gitmap_push to sync committed changes to ArcGIS Portal
Status summary, commit hash confirmation, and push result indicating the map is up to date on Portal
