What This Skill Does

Architecture standards for Node.js projects designed to keep individual files under 400 lines so AI agents can read and edit them without exceeding context limits. Covers route modularization, config externalization via config.json, and a built-in admin dashboard for hot-reloading settings. Applies to REST APIs, H5 games, scrapers, dashboards, and SDK libraries.

Keeping files under 400 lines cuts per-read token cost from ~40K to ~2.7K, giving AI agents 10-15 productive editing rounds instead of 3-5 before context compression degrades output.

When to use it

  • Refactoring a 3000-line server.js into modular routes and services
  • Starting a new Express API with AI-friendly file size limits
  • Building a Phaser game with canvas logic split across focused modules
  • Setting up a web scraper with runtime-editable config and admin UI
  • Converting hardcoded values to config.json with hot-reload support

Example Workflow

Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.

INPUT

User asks: Refactor my 2500-line Express app into a maintainable, AI-friendly structure

AGENT
  1. 1Identifies project type (API Service) from the signal table
  2. 2Reads references/tool.md for the recommended directory layout
  3. 3Creates routes/ and services/ directories, splitting logic by domain
  4. 4Extracts all hardcoded values into config.json, served via /api/config
  5. 5Adds admin.html and routes/admin.js for config editing and hot-reload
OUTPUT

Modular project where no file exceeds 400 lines, with a config admin dashboard accessible at /admin
