Version History
thermikbuddy 1.0.3 - Added scripts for parsing DHV weather data and diagnostic parameters: scripts/dhv_parser.py and scripts/diag_params.py - Included metadata and origin files: _meta.json and .clawhub/origin.json - Initial onboarding of new parsing and diagnostic utilities
What This Skill Does
Calculates a 0-10 soaring-condition score for glider and paraglider pilots using Open-Meteo ICON-D2 weather data. The score combines 11 parameters including boundary layer height, CAPE, wind shear, and 700hPa humidity. Covers Alpine regions in Germany and Austria with Foehn detection and ridge soaring bonuses.
No general weather service combines boundary layer height, wind shear, Foehn detection, and CAPE into a single soaring score the way this does.
When to use it
- Deciding whether to drive to the airfield on Saturday morning
- Planning a cross-country glider flight route for the weekend
- Checking Foehn risk before launching at an Alpine site
- Evaluating ridge soaring conditions in the Werdenfels area
- Getting a 3-day thermal outlook for a paragliding trip
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: 'Lohnt sich Samstag fliegen am Werdenfels?'
- 1Identifies Werdenfels as the target region, skips the region selection prompt
- 2Runs run_forecast.py with --region werdenfels --days 3
- 3Parses JSON output from stdout
- 4Formats the day overview with thermal score, climb rates, cloud base height, and hourly activity chart
- 5Appends links to DHV Wetter, SkySight, and Soaringmeteo
Formatted forecast for Saturday showing score 7/10 (Guter Tag), climb rates ~2.5 m/s, cloud base 1800m MSL, and any active warnings
