Version History
- Clarified API key usage: Added note that `brave_search` and `brave_suggest` use `BRAVE_SEARCH_API_KEY` while `brave_answers` requires `BRAVE_ANSWERS_API_KEY`. - No code or feature changes—documentation update only.
What This Skill Does
Gives agents real-time web search, query autosuggestions, and AI-grounded answers through the official Brave Search API. Three tools handle ranked search results, autocomplete, and cited answers from live sources.
Uses the official API rather than scraping, so responses arrive as structured JSON with proper rate limit headers and error codes.
When to use it
- Looking up the latest release notes for a library or runtime
- Researching a breaking news story or recent event
- Powering autocomplete in a custom search interface
- Getting a cited AI answer when comparing two technologies
- Finding current documentation for an unfamiliar API
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: What changed in the latest React release?
- 1Calls brave_answers with the query and enable_citations=true
- 2Brave returns an AI-synthesized answer grounded in live search results
- 3Skill extracts inline citations from the response
- 4Returns the answer text and source URLs to the user
