What This Skill Does
Retrieves real-time space weather data from NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, covering solar flares, geomagnetic storms, solar wind, and aurora forecasts. Conditions are reported on NOAA's R, S, and G severity scales. A 3-day forecast and active alert feed are included.
Pulls directly from NOAA's official free public API, so no account, subscription, or API key is required.
When to use it
- Check aurora visibility before driving to a dark sky location
- Verify HF radio propagation conditions before a ham radio contest
- Monitor geomagnetic storm risk for satellite operations
- Get a 3-day solar activity forecast before an outdoor trip
- Check for active space weather alerts affecting power infrastructure
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: Is there a good chance of seeing aurora tonight?
- 1Run aurora command to fetch current geomagnetic conditions and tomorrow's forecast
- 2Run solarwind command to retrieve the Bz component and total field magnitude
- 3Interpret Bz value against the -5 nT threshold for aurora favorability
- 4Cross-reference G-scale storm level with solar wind data to rate the overall outlook
Aurora outlook rated MODERATE, Bz at -2 nT, minor geomagnetic activity forecast for tomorrow, aurora possible at high latitudes
