Version History
- Changed all API base URLs from `shelterfinance.com` to `shelter.money`. - Updated homepage metadata to use `https://shelter.money`. - No changes to core endpoints or functionality; documentation and examples now reflect the new domain.
What This Skill Does
Shelter connects to a user's real bank data via Plaid and exposes it through a structured Agent API. Endpoints cover safe-to-spend checks, cash flow forecasting, subscription audits, purchase simulations, and AI coaching. All access is read-only.
Rather than exposing raw transaction dumps, it returns pre-computed insights (safe-to-spend, runway, alerts) ranked by query cost, so agents can answer financial questions without expensive calls every time.
When to use it
- Checking if you can afford a last-minute expense before buying
- Finding forgotten subscriptions quietly draining your account
- Getting a daily financial snapshot before making spending decisions
- Predicting the date your balance will go negative
- Asking for coaching on a specific topic like debt or savings
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: Can I afford a $400 TV right now?
- 1Confirm SHELTER_API_KEY and SHELTER_API_URL are set
- 2POST to /v1/affordability with {"amount": 400, "description": "TV"}
- 3Read canAfford, safeToSpendAfter, impactOnRunway, and recommendation from the response
- 4Check confidence score and flag if below 50
- 5Present a clear yes or no, remaining safe-to-spend, and days of runway lost
"No — that purchase would leave you with $42 safe-to-spend and cut your runway from 18 days to 11. Guardian suggests waiting until after your paycheck on the 15th."
