What This Skill Does

Looks up U.S. sales tax rates via the ZipTax API. Supports address, ZIP code, and lat/lng queries across 12,000+ jurisdictions. Returns total rates plus state, county, city, and district breakdowns, along with freight and service taxability flags.

Address-level lookups return a single exact rate rather than the multiple conflicting rates a ZIP code alone can produce.

When to use it

  • Calculate sales tax for a customer checkout in a specific U.S. city
  • Verify whether shipping charges are taxable in a given jurisdiction
  • Get a jurisdiction breakdown for a multi-district address
  • Look up tax rates by coordinates for a field service location
  • Check account API usage against the monthly quota

Example Workflow

Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.

INPUT

  2. 2Send GET request to https://api.zip-tax.com/request/v60 with the address parameter and X-API-KEY header
  3. 3Confirm metadata.response.code equals 100 for a successful response
  4. 4Read taxSummaries[0].rate for the combined rate
  5. 5Read baseRates array for the state, county, city, and district breakdown
OUTPUT

Total rate 0.0775 (7.75%), broken down as California state 0.06, Orange County 0.0025, Irvine city 0.01, district 0.005
