What This Skill Does
Indexes YouTube channel videos and transcripts into a searchable knowledge base. Supports two modes: semantic search via solograph MCP, or standalone file-based indexing using yt-dlp. Outputs transcript files and a summary index for later search.
Combining yt-dlp transcript extraction with solograph's semantic search lets you query video content by meaning rather than exact keywords.
When to use it
- Search across all videos from a YouTube creator for a specific topic
- Build a local transcript archive of a startup advice channel
- Find which video mentioned a particular framework or concept
- Sync new uploads from a channel into an existing knowledge base
- Extract key insights from a set of tutorial videos without watching them
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: index the last 10 videos from @GregIsenberg and make them searchable
- 1Check if yt-dlp is installed and solograph MCP tools are available
- 2Run solograph-cli index-youtube -c GregIsenberg -n 10 to fetch and index transcripts
- 3Verify the youtube source appears via source_list MCP tool
- 4Test semantic search with source_search('startup idea', source='youtube')
- 5Report number of videos indexed, skipped, and how to query the index
10 videos indexed, 8 transcripts downloaded, 2 skipped (no subtitles). Index searchable via MCP source_search or grep in docs/youtube/.
