What This Skill Does
Automates Brave Search API key extraction and applies it to OpenClaw configuration. Uses browser automation to retrieve the key via JavaScript evaluation, bypassing character transcription errors that can occur when an LLM reads the key directly.
Extracting the key via JavaScript evaluation instead of LLM transcription eliminates silent misconfigurations caused by visually similar characters like O/0 or l/1.
When to use it
- Fixing a missing_brave_api_key error in OpenClaw
- Enabling web_search for the first time
- Re-applying a rotated Brave API key after account changes
- Setting up a fresh OpenClaw install with search capability
- Recovering from a broken web search config
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: 'I'm getting a missing_brave_api_key error, can you fix it?'
- 1Navigate to https://api-dashboard.search.brave.com/app/keys using the openclaw browser profile
- 2Click the reveal (eye) button to expose the API key
- 3Run JavaScript evaluation to extract the exact key string from the page DOM
- 4Execute apply-api-key.js with the extracted key to write it directly to OpenClaw config
OpenClaw config updated with the correct Brave API key; web_search becomes functional
