Version History
Download YouTube videos as MP4 at highest quality
What This Skill Does
Downloads YouTube videos as MP4 files at the highest available quality. Accepts full YouTube URLs and a short label, then saves the video locally and logs it to a registry file.
Automatically merges best video and audio streams into a single MP4 and maintains a structured registry, so you get both the file and a searchable record without extra steps.
When to use it
- Saving a tutorial video to watch offline
- Archiving an interview or event recap
- Downloading a YouTube Short for local editing
- Building a local video library with labeled assets
- Logging downloaded videos for later reference in a dashboard
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: download this https://youtube.com/watch?v=abc123 and label it event-recap
- 1Parses the YouTube URL and label from the user message
- 2Runs the download script with the URL and label as arguments
- 3yt-dlp fetches the highest resolution video and best audio stream
- 4Merges streams into MP4 format (h264 + aac)
- 5Writes the file to the assets directory and appends an entry to registry.json
MP4 saved to ~/.openclaw/workspace/assets/videos/event-recap_abc123_20260201_234500.mp4, registry.json updated with metadata including filesize and download timestamp
