Version History
- Environment variable names updated: `GATEWAY_URL` → `PINATA_GATEWAY_URL`, `GATEWAY_KEY` → `PINATA_GATEWAY_KEY` throughout the documentation and metadata. - References in sample URLs, usage instructions, and notes now consistently use `PINATA_GATEWAY_URL`. - No changes to endpoints or API functionality. Documentation only.
What This Skill Does
Provides access to Pinata's IPFS storage API. Covers file uploads, group management, gateway configuration, EIP-712 content signatures, x402 micropayment setup, and AI-powered vector search across stored files.
Combines IPFS pinning, access control, payments, and vector search in one API instead of stitching together separate services.
When to use it
- Uploading and organizing files on IPFS with metadata tags
- Generating temporary signed URLs for private file access
- Setting up pay-per-access IPFS content with USDC on Base
- Running semantic search over a collection of stored documents
- Pinning existing IPFS CIDs to a Pinata account
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: upload a file to a private IPFS group and return a temporary download link
- 1Upload the file via POST to uploads.pinata.cloud/v3/files with network=private and the target group_id
- 2Retrieve the file's CID from the upload response
- 3POST to api.pinata.cloud/v3/files/private/download_link with the gateway URL, expiry, and current Unix timestamp
- 4Return the signed URL to the user
A temporary signed URL valid for the specified duration that grants access to the private file
