Version History
Added verify command for ghost record detection, automatic safety checks before destructive operations, DNS snapshots in backups, configurable backup directory
What This Skill Does
Wrapper around the Namecheap API for DNS record management. The Namecheap setHosts endpoint replaces all records on a domain, so this skill fetches existing records first and merges changes before writing. Includes dry-run mode, automatic backups, and ghost record detection.
Direct Namecheap API use requires manually fetching all records before every write or risk deleting your entire DNS config; this skill handles that fetch-merge-write pattern automatically.
When to use it
- Add Mailgun DNS records without wiping email forwarding
- Preview DNS changes before applying them to a live domain
- Roll back a bad DNS change from a timestamped backup
- Audit live DNS against what the Namecheap API can see
- Remove a stale TXT record without touching other records
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: add an SPF TXT record to example.com via Namecheap without breaking existing records
- 1Run verify to check for ghost records not visible to the API
- 2Run add with --dry-run to preview the merge diff
- 3Confirm no unintended deletions in the diff output
- 4Run add without --dry-run to apply the change
- 5Check the auto-created backup in the backups directory
SPF TXT record added to example.com; existing records preserved; backup saved as example.com-{timestamp}.json
