What This Skill Does
A command-line tool for planning garden beds with companion planting, plant spacing, and sun exposure tracking. Stores layouts in a local JSON database and supports multi-season crop rotation planning. Exports layouts to markdown for offline reference.
Keeps companion planting rules, spacing data, and bed layouts in one place instead of cross-referencing multiple charts or websites.
When to use it
- Planning a new raised bed before buying seeds
- Finding which plants to avoid planting next to tomatoes
- Mapping out a Three Sisters corn-bean-squash bed
- Rotating crops across beds from one year to the next
- Maximizing yield in a 3x4 foot partial-shade plot
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: Plan a small full-sun bed with tomatoes and good companions
- 1Run `garden_layout.py add-bed "Tomato Patch" --width 4 --length 6 --sun "full"`
- 2Run `garden_layout.py companions "tomato"` to get compatible plants
- 3Run `garden_layout.py spacing "tomato"` and `garden_layout.py spacing "basil"` for placement
- 4Add plants with `add-plant` using row/col positions that respect spacing
- 5Run `garden_layout.py layout` to review the final arrangement
