What This Skill Does

Queries the dr.eamer.dev API for word origins, historical sound changes, language family trees, and etymology chains. Covers root words, historical forms, cognates, and phonological shifts across proto-languages and their descendants.

Combines etymology lookup, cognate exploration, and diachronic sound-change data in a single API, avoiding the need to cross-reference multiple linguistic databases manually.

When to use it

  • Looking up the origin language and first known use of a word
  • Tracing how a word's meaning shifted across centuries
  • Finding cognates across related languages like Latin and French
  • Researching phonological changes from Proto-Indo-European to modern English
  • Adding etymological depth to fiction, essays, or academic writing

Example Workflow

Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.

INPUT

User asks: 'What is the origin of the word knight and how is it related to other Germanic words?'

AGENT
  1. 1Call GET /v1/etymology/explore?word=knight&lang=en to retrieve the full etymology chain
  2. 2Extract root words, historical forms, and language family context from the response
  3. 3Call GET /v1/etymology/sound-changes?from=proto-germanic&to=english to get phonological shift rules
  4. 4Combine etymology chain with sound change data to explain cognate relationships
OUTPUT

A structured explanation of 'knight' tracing from Proto-Germanic *knextaz through Old English cniht, with documented sound changes and related words in Dutch, German, and other Germanic languages.
