Setup & Installation
Or with the ClawHub CLI, for registry-managed skill folders outside a full OpenClaw workspace:
Version History
Security hardening: added regex validation for share (alphanumeric/slashes only), mountPoint (absolute path only), and backupPaths (no command substitution, semicolons, pipes, backticks, or path traversal). Added boolean validation for includeSubAgentWorkspaces. Restore workspace names validated against strict pattern. All config inputs now validated before any shell command execution.
What This Skill Does
Backs up OpenClaw workspace files, configs, and agent data to a Synology NAS over SMB. Runs incremental daily snapshots with configurable retention and supports Tailscale for secure VPS-to-NAS connectivity.
Incremental rsync-based snapshots keep storage usage low while Tailscale avoids exposing SMB to the public internet.
When to use it
- Automated nightly backup of OpenClaw workspace to a home NAS
- Restoring agent configs after a VPS failure or reinstall
- Checking backup health before making major config changes
- Syncing a remote VPS to a local NAS securely over Tailscale
- Pruning old snapshots to stay within NAS storage limits
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: Set up daily backups of my OpenClaw workspace to my Synology NAS
- 1Creates ~/.openclaw/.smb-credentials with chmod 600 and the user's Synology credentials
- 2Writes synology-backup.json config with host IP, share path, backup paths, and retention settings
- 3Installs cifs-utils and rsync via apt-get
- 4Runs scripts/backup.sh to perform the first full backup
- 5Runs scripts/status.sh to confirm mount health and snapshot count
Incremental daily snapshots stored under backups/openclaw/<date>/ on the NAS with 7-day retention
