What This Skill Does

Retrieves chart data and metadata from Our World in Data using the owid-catalog Python module. Searches run in English regardless of the user's language; the agent translates results as a post-processing step. Output includes chart title, description, source URL, and a summary of available entities.

owid-catalog gives direct programmatic access to OWID's structured chart catalog, avoiding manual scraping or parsing of HTML pages.

When to use it

  • Looking up child mortality trends by country
  • Checking historical CO2 emissions figures
  • Finding life expectancy data for a specific region
  • Retrieving global poverty rate comparisons
  • Summarizing vaccination coverage statistics for a report

Example Workflow

Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.

INPUT

User asks: What is the trend in global life expectancy?

AGENT
  1. 1Translates query to English if the user's language differs
  2. 2Calls client.charts.search('life expectancy', limit=3)
  3. 3Selects the most contextually relevant chart result
  4. 4Fetches chart data and extracts title, subtitle, URL, and entity count
  5. 5Returns structured summary and translates into the user's language if needed
OUTPUT

Structured response with chart title, description, link to the OWID page, and the number of countries covered
