26 battle-tested prompts for engineering leaders: 1-on-1 prep, team health, incident retros, tech strategy, hiring, career dev, stakeholder comms

What This Skill Does

A library of 25+ structured prompts for engineering managers, tech leads, and VPs covering 1-on-1s, team health, incident retros, technical strategy, hiring, career development, and stakeholder communication. Each prompt uses placeholder variables and specifies an output format. Built from 13 years of hands-on engineering management.

The prompts enforce specific frameworks (SBI, RACI, RAG status) and include steps for handling defensive reactions and knowing when to involve HR, rather than offering generic management advice.

When to use it

  • Preparing for a 1-on-1 with an underperforming direct report
  • Running a blameless incident retrospective within 48 hours
  • Drafting an exec update before a quarterly review
  • Building a structured interview process when opening a new role
  • Writing a promotion case during a performance cycle
