What This Skill Does
Diagnoses and triages cron job failures across Linux and macOS systems. Checks job states, identifies error patterns in system logs, prioritizes failures by criticality, and writes a structured health report.
Combines log inspection, error pattern matching, and priority triage into a single workflow instead of manually grepping logs and tracking failures across separate files.
When to use it
- Finding why a nightly backup job stopped running
- Debugging a scheduled script that produces no output
- Triaging multiple failing jobs after a server incident
- Auditing cron health before a production deployment
- Fixing PATH or permission errors in crontab entries
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: My backup cron job hasn't run in two days — what's wrong?
- 1Lists all user and system crontab entries
- 2Searches cron logs for recent execution attempts and error messages
- 3Identifies the error pattern, such as 'command not found' due to a missing PATH
- 4Assigns a criticality priority to the backup job
- 5Writes a health report with the error, last successful run date, and a suggested fix
A markdown report at ~/workspace/reports/cron-health-YYYY-MM-DD.md listing the failed backup job, its error message, priority level, and the recommended fix (use full executable path in crontab)
