What This Skill Does
Upgrades a Next.js project to a target version by reading the current version from package.json, fetching the official migration guides and codemod docs from nextjs.org, running automated transforms, and updating peer dependencies. Handles incremental upgrades for multi-major-version jumps.
Combines version detection, official guide lookup, codemod execution, and dependency updates into one guided sequence instead of manually cross-referencing changelogs and running steps out of order.
When to use it
- Upgrading a Next.js 13 app to version 15
- Automating codemod transforms after a major version bump
- Fixing async Request API breaking changes introduced in v15
- Keeping React and Next.js peer dependencies in sync after an upgrade
- Identifying build errors caused by deprecated or removed APIs
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: upgrade my Next.js project to version 15
- 1Reads package.json to identify current Next.js version and related dependencies
- 2Fetches the official upgrade guide and codemod reference from nextjs.org
- 3Runs applicable codemods via npx @next/codemod@latest for automated breaking-change fixes
- 4Updates Next.js, React, and React DOM to their latest versions
- 5Runs npm run build to surface any remaining issues and reports what needs manual attention
Project dependencies updated to Next.js 15 with breaking changes resolved via codemods and remaining manual steps listed from the upgrade guide
