Setup & Installation
Or with the ClawHub CLI, for registry-managed skill folders outside a full OpenClaw workspace:
What This Skill Does
Downloads YouTube videos to local storage with control over quality and output format. Supports resolutions from 360p to 1080p, multiple container formats (MP4, WebM, MKV), and audio-only MP3 extraction. Uses yt-dlp, which the script installs automatically if not present.
Wraps yt-dlp with a straightforward CLI that handles installation and stream merging automatically, so users avoid manual yt-dlp configuration.
When to use it
- Save a tutorial video for offline viewing
- Extract audio from a music video as MP3
- Archive a lecture or conference recording
- Download a video in a smaller resolution to save disk space
- Grab a clip in WebM format for a web project
Example Workflow
Here's how your AI assistant might use this skill in practice.
User asks: Download this YouTube video in 1080p as MP4: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ
- 1Receives the YouTube URL and the requested quality and format flags
- 2Runs the download script with -q 1080p and -f mp4 arguments
- 3yt-dlp fetches video metadata and selects matching streams
- 4Merges the video and audio streams into a single MP4 file
- 5Saves the output to /mnt/user-data/outputs/ using the video title as the filename
MP4 file saved to /mnt/user-data/outputs/ at 1080p quality
